Hearts Around Hartz Scavenger Hunt

Creating a fun and educational scavenger hunt around town

I have to admit, this summer has been a struggle to find fun activities for my family. After spending three months in quarantine, it’s been hard to get motivated again. But then I heard about the Heart Sculpture Exhibit in Downtown Danville, California, and I knew I had to create my own Hearts Around Hartz Scavenger Hunt!

Hearts Around Hartz

If you’re unfamiliar with Hearts Around Hartz, it refers to the heart sculptures placed around Hartz Avenue in Danville, California. Last summer, the town placed dog sculptures around town, and my kids loved searching for and marking them off in their booklets. So, when I heard they were doing it again, but with hearts this time, I couldn’t find a printable scavenger hunt, so I made my own!

Last night, I prepared my younger kids for an early morning adventure – finding the heart sculptures. To make it even more exciting, I created a printable scavenger hunt for them to mark off as we went along.

I know it may seem strange that I had to prepare my kids to go out, but after months of staying at home, they’ve gotten used to spending their mornings in pajamas. Getting dressed and going out has become a big deal. I’m hoping they’ll get back into the swing of things soon.

Originally, I planned for us to leave early in the morning to avoid crowds. But, as it turns out, mornings are not my strong suit. So, we ended up leaving around 10:30, and our little town was already buzzing with activity. Instead of walking, my kids wanted to stay in the car and drive around, so that’s what we did.

This printable scavenger hunt works whether you’re walking or driving around town, or even a combination of both. Some of the heart sculptures are quite far apart, so a map can be helpful to plan your trips. I’m not an expert at creating maps, but I did my best. Just a heads-up, the heart near San Ramon Valley High School may be a bit tricky to find. The website initially mentioned it being at the “Danville Sign, Entrance to Downtown,” but I couldn’t find an address for that spot. So, I marked it on the map near a restaurant right behind the town of Danville sign/brick wall. Hope that helps!

I know the map included might be small, but it gives you a general idea of the heart sculptures’ locations in town. I hope it guides you on your journey to these amazing pieces of art. If you haven’t seen them yet, I won’t spoil anything, but I definitely plan on going again without the kids so I can take a closer look. They are truly beautiful! Let me know in the comments below which ones are your favorites if you’ve seen them.

I’m also hoping to update this printable with a picture version for kids who can’t read, but that will require permission from the city, which I haven’t obtained yet. I’ve also heard that three more hearts will be added to the exhibit by the end of the month, so I’ll update the printable if that happens.
